Drug Delivery System for Superficial Mycoses in AIDS

The goal of this project is to develop a unique coating formulation for use as a sustained release, antifungal skin preparation for treatment of superficial mycoses associated with acquired immunodeficiency disorders (AIDS) and other diseases. The prevalence of superficial fungal infections in AIDS patients varies between 46 and 80%. Superficial dermatophyte infections disrupt rest, comfort, and quality of life and cause social stigmatization particularly when lesions occur on the face . We are developing a unique antifungal drug delivery system for direct application to the skin that will result in fewer required applications and continuous delivery of the antifungal agent. The patented technology is safe for both operator and patient, is able to protect the skin from corrosive liquids and mechanical abrasion, remains intact for more than 24 hours, is water resistant, has a breathable microporous structure and allows cosmetic dyes to be incorporated into the formula.
